Upcoming event: Conservatoire Folk Ensemble!

Coming to Alexanders Jazz Theatre next Monday 23rd May, the Conservatoire Folk Ensemble, now in its 8th year of touring, is a band like no other. With a touring line up of over 45 players this unique ensemble has an energy and power that is unrivalled; it has to be seen to be believed.

On this occasion, the Folk Ensemble features three of our current Popular Music students; look out for Heather, Stu and Graeme with  featured spot during the gig!

Using players from the prestigious Birmingham Conservatoire ensures that the standard of musicianship is top drawer and being lead by folk fiddler Joe Broughton means the music has the feel of a spontaneous folk orchestra and a show that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

“Here you’ll find the whole gamut of folk culture and its aural tradition, and much more – Irish session staples played as though life itself depended on it, Fairport tunes played as if by a Chinese orchestra, breezy Latino brass meanderings, skirling percussion, swooning string syncopations, moments of tense repose where (say) a lone whistle takes centre stage, sparkily extravagant jazzy gestures, and so forth. Tremendously exhilarating (often exhaustingly so!) and joyously life-affirming.”
